Winter weddings ask more of a dress than summer ones do. The venue will be cold at the door and warm by the dance floor. The photographs will be taken indoors, under artificial light, against dark wood and candlelight. And she will be sitting through a ceremony, a dinner, and several hours of speeches before anyone lets her run.

What works: deeper colours that hold their own under low light — navy, ivory, black, deep velvet. Fabrics with some weight, so the dress hangs properly instead of floating. A lining she cannot feel, because an itchy dress will end the evening early. And a shape she can actually sit down in.

What to avoid: pure white, unless the bride has asked for it. Anything strappy in a stone church. Anything so stiff she will not wear it past the ceremony.
